Explore Wine: Four Week Introductory Series. $180

Starts Tuesday, September 9 at 6:30 pm

A practical, fun, utilitarian workshop to familiarize you with the major types and styles of wine. You will learn how wine is made, how to taste and evaluate wine, and ultimately what you like personally. Our goal is to provide you with the information and experience to make you comfortable, confident consumers.

September 9 – Explore the Major Varieties
Know the noble and notable wines of the world and a bit of history.
September 16 – Explore Old vs. New World
Learn how a region, grape grower and wine maker can influence the final product.
September 23 – Explore White
Dig deeper into the huge variety of white wines.
September 30 – Explore Red
Taste through the world of red wine.
Conclude with practical advice on continuing the adventure.

About Ellisa Cooper: Ellisa possesses an extensive, almost encyclopedic, knowledge of all things wine-related. Her own education in wine began while working in several of the great New York restaurants where top chefs Terrance Brennan, Waldy Malouf, Marco Moiera, Dave Pasternack and Marc Murphy prepared foods that demanded great wines. She is currently a Master Sommelier candidate through The Court of Master Sommeliers. She is a founder of the retail shop Discovery Wines.

Ellisa's mantra is simple, "The only way to learn wine is to drink wine."

Explore Wine & Cheese. $75

Monday, September 22, 6:30 to 8 pm
Amanda Crawford, Instructor

You love cheese. You adore wine. Now learn how to pair them perfectly. Veteran of Murray's Cheese and a wine specialist at Christie's, Amanda Crawford will choose 6 cheeses representing the majors. Then she'll scour the cellar to find the ideal wine match. You'll learn cheese and wine basics, such as major grapes and main milk types, how to shop for these artisan products and how to store and serve them. This is a great way to hone your palate while having fun.

Amanda has an eclectic range of wine employment history, from Astor Wines to a harvest in Croatia. She is currently a specialist in the Christie's Wine Department and teaches frequently around New York City, including regular classes at Murray's Cheese.

Natural, Organic & Biodynamic Wines. $75

Saturday, Sept. 27, 4-6 pm

Who is Rudolf Steiner and what does he have to do with vineyard management? What is the difference between organic and biodynamic wines? Unearth the many misconceptions about sulfites, tyramines, histamines and other compounds found in wine. Perplexed by the puzzling red wine headache? Concerned about sustainable farming? Ask what you've always wanted to know about the journey that grapes make from vineyard to bottle. Taste eight wines from around the world, representing the best of what's out there.

Meg Staloff's work as a consultant to fine wine importer and distributor Polaner Selections took her to wine stores and restaurants around New York and Westchester. She has been in the wine business for over 10 years in London, Boston and New York, working in wine retail and as a restaurant wine steward. She has served as an instructor at the Boston Center for Adult Education and currently teaches wine classes at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan.

Explore The Major Grapes. $80

Monday, Oct. 6, 6:30-8 pm

How does a Cabernet from California differ from Bordeaux? Can one taste the difference? Is terroir fact or fiction? Discover specific characteristics of grapes in this class as we explore the major grape varieties from different corners of the world. Taste a Syrah from Santa Barbara in contrast with a Crozes-Hermitage. Compare a Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre against one from Marlborough, New Zealand. Take a class and find out what the fuss is all about.

Karen King worked with the Union Square Hospitality Group for twenty years. She was the Wine Director at Union Square Café, the Beverage Director at Gramercy Tavern, and she opened the restaurants at The Museum of Modern Art in 2004 in the role of Beverage Director.

Karen has taught wine classes for The French Culinary Institute and at the Institute for Culinary Education, among others. She has served as a judge in wine competitions and joined Eric Asimov's panel for The New York Times on numerous occasions. Sharing information and joy about wine is one of her passions. She is now working with Winebow on the distribution side of the business as a sales manager.

In 1967, a couple of kids in the East Village wrote a "Love-Rock Tribal Musical." It was joyous and outrageous, causing a lot of prim heads to turn. HAIR was revived this summer in Central Park to much acclaim. Now, a new documentary tells the story of the show's origins. Come meet the filmmakers and other special guests.
